Minimal Closet Design

Inspiration

My closet, like most of my house, was inspired by minimalistic design, clean lines, simplicity, and functionality. I have always loved the work of many different Belgian designers whose style focuses on elegance, warmth, neutral color palettes, and a slightly modern aesthetic, and highlighted certain elements of their designs that I wanted to somehow incorporate into my own closet. During the initial design stages, I turned to Pinterest in order to find examples of the overall style and details that I wanted to be included as well.

Design

The space that I had to work with for this project was limited so I had to be creative in order to both maintain the aesthetic and style of the house but create an organized, uncluttered space. The closet is connected to the master bedroom and master bathroom so it made sense to utilize an open floor plan and create one big space with beautiful, visual transitions.

I chose to use tall, minimalistic doors as the main structure of the closet that was simple but still elegant with specific details like custom made handles by DeGiulio Design. Each area of the closet was created to store specific clothing items and accessories. This element was key to keeping the closet organized and functional.

Another element of the closet is a floating bureau covered in white leather with oversized drawers. Each drawer has customized inserts finished with the same white leather to organize specific clothing items like folded t-shirts, lingerie, and pajamas. I also chose to incorporate a moveable clothing rack in the middle of the closet to display my most current and favorite pieces of the season. To me, certain pieces of clothing are like art and they ought to be displayed in all their beauty.

Lighting also played a large roll in the design of my closet. I wanted to be sure to include custom lights in the cabinets that highlighted all of the pieces held inside. I love the contrast of the clean, simple look the closet has when the doors are closed compared to the illuminated presence the clothes have once the doors are opened. A large mirror that wraps around the corner of the closet was the final touch.

I worked with Lisa Adams of LA Closet Design to create this dream open-concept space. I frequently travel to Los Angeles and had heard about Lisa and loved her new, modern approach to designing closets. She understands the needs of a modern woman, pays attention to every detail, and works to make each space personalized specifically for you.

Organization

The overall design of my closet helps to keep all of my clothes organized and in place. Each area of the closet is designed to hold a specific clothing item - whether that's dresses of different lengths, blouses, jackets, hanging pants, oversized sweaters, jeans, hats, and accessories. We designed one cabinet to be specifically for shoes with custom lighting showcasing each pair. The floating bureau has a built-in electronic safe that discretely stores my jewelry as well. My closet is all coordinated by a color palette. I think it's much more visually appealing and easy to find specific clothing items when categorized this way.

Each aspect of my closet design serves a purpose and I love how functional I was able to make this space. I love to display my current favorite art piece on the wall over the floating bureau to add to the beauty of this room. It's truly is my favorite place to start and end the day.
